El Idolo about to fly
Mysterio and Andrade clashed the previous week in a tag team match that also featured Samoa Joe and Mustafa Ali. Andrade and Joe picked that the victory in that one. We are currently 2 weeks away from the Royal Rumble.
Breaking news: Rey Mysterio Jr is incredible. Shocking, I know. But specifically, the thing that makes him incredible is his mind. The man might be in the top 5 wrestling minds in the world today. Other great flyers in the world have surpassed Rey on a purely moves level, but they don't get nearly as much as Rey does from moves. His pacing is world class. His execution is flawless. And his creativity is maybe the best I've ever seen. For example, in this match, he does a Canadian Destroyer. I've seen a lot of people do Canadian Destroyers since Petey Williams broke into TNA many years ago. I saw the move become meaningless after guys started abusing it(shoots a look at AAA 10 years ago). Rey in 2019 can still make it a special move by doing a neat transition into the move that I've never seen before. I've been seeing Rey regularly wrestle for the better part of 22 years. He's always looking for the safe but creative twist on moves and spots. He almost always finds it.
Andrade is excellent as well. He's a stud in his physical prime. He's one of the most well-rounded wrestlers in WWE today from an in-ring standpoint. The number of guys that can fly, strike, grapple, and put together a great match like Andrade can is minimal in this company. His growth from the skinny young flyer a decade ago in CMLL to the guy that we have today is really something.
Shout out to Corey Graves. Corey did an excellent job on commentary. Mostly acting as the play by play guy in the match with Tom Phillips backing him up with Commentary. Essentially reversing their usual roles. I felt like he was genially interested in the match, which isn't always a given with WWE commentary.
Also shout out to Zelina Vega, who did an excellent job as a manager at ringside. She might be the best ringside manager that WWE has had in many years due to her athletic ability as a wrestler, and also her doing an excellent job of manager-selling.
This match does have blemishes. The main one being that WWE TV match formatting is not ideal for matches. I think that a match going through two commercial breaks hurts the pacing of the match. It's not a make or break difference, but a straight 15-minutes match will always feel better than a 15-minute match with 2 breaks. WWE's camera work is also not ideal. I think everyone hates the way WWE zooms in and out of moves in a distracting manner.
With all that being said, this is a great match. It will probably end up being one of the best TV matches in WWE this year. I also suspect that this will be a cool hidden gem at the end of the year by the time people forget about it due to time. This match makes it to the match of the year list.Rating: 4 out of 4 Stars - Watch it if you can
